Mildew Removal

Effective mildew removal from clothing means that you have to take steps to remove the spots of mildew or mold as soon as you notice them. If you don’t, the mold will continue to grow and weaken or rot the material. First of all, you need to take the material outdoors and brush off any loose spots of mildew to prevent the spores from dispersing inside you home. Brushing them off indoors will lead to a larger mildew removal problem.

You need to wash the mildewed materials in warm water and let them dry thoroughly in the sun. If after using this mildew removal method, the spots of mold are still there, you have to take other steps to get rid of the mold. Mildew removal for materials that you cannot wash means that you need to get them dry-cleaned. Bleach usually works well at removing the mildew, but you do have to be careful not to pour it directly on the material because it will take out the color.

Lemon juice and salt are effective for mildew removal. Moisten the stain caused by the mold with a mixture of these two ingredients and scrub with your hands. Allow the material to dry thoroughly. Once it is dry you can do a thorough mold and mildew inspection to see whether or not it was successful. Then you can rinse the material to take out the odor of the lemon juice and salt.

Mold and mildew also occur on unholstered materials such as pillows and sofas, especially in a house that is closed up for any length of time. The humidity in the house cause moisture to form on the upholstery and this leads to a growth of mold and mildew. You generally don’t have to do much of a mold and mildew inspection because you will smell the mildew when you open the door. With mildew removal for these items, you should bring them outdoors and brush off any spots of mold with a broom. Depending on the size of the spots of mildew, you might even want to wear a facemask to ensure that you don’t breathe in any of the mold spores that get dispersed.

Sponge the upholstered materials lightly with water and detergent when you undertake mildew removal. The trick is to try to use as little water as possible because if it soaks into the sponge filling, it could cause a bigger problem with mold. There are also upholstery and carpet shampoos that are effective in removing mold. Mildew removal is not difficult, but if you feel that the job is more than you can handle, you can have the upholstery cleaned by a professional. Another solution for mildew removal is to throw away anything on which you find mildew and purchase new.
